Why Drum?

There is magic that happens when people come together, to share their rhythm, even if they’ve never drummed before.   Participating in a drum circle leaves you with a sense of belonging, a sense of togetherness that comes from a shared experience.

Drumming is open to everyone and anyone regardless of race, religion or language. There is no need for prior musical knowledge because drumming comes from the heart and soul. Rhythm is the universal language that breaks down cultural barriers and invites unity – it is innate in all of us.

The health benefits of drumming are numerous.  Drumming relieves stress; improves the three “C’s”: co-ordination, concentration, and communication; increases attention span; lowers blood pressure; builds self-esteem … the list goes on.  Healing happens even when we are not aware of it.

To put it in the simplest form – drumming is fun!  Watch a small child with sticks in hand, banging without hesitation or reservation.  Drumming brings out our inner child and connects us to that playful spirit that we have long since abandoned. Drumming opens us up to explore that which lies within us: the creativity that needs an outlet, the emotions we wish to express.

The drum is the ancient tool of women and men.  It is a powerful communication tool that connects us to ourselves, and to our community. There is no right or wrong in drumming.  Drumming brings equality and fosters acceptance.

There is really only one way to answer the question “Why drum?” and that is to drum and experience firsthand the magic.  Then, and only then, will you truly have the answer.

Come drum!
